AIP VFR in SkyDemon

Forum - Technik & Flugzeuge

  • Moin,

    Zitat eMail:
    ...." Dear Gerhard,

Welcome to the February 2014 edition of the SkyDemon newsletter for people who have tried our service but not yet subscribed. We last wrote to you in October, and with European flying activity slightly reduced over the winter break we’ve been hard at work on new features ready for the start of the next flying season.

Remember, if you signed up for a free SkyDemon trial more than six months ago, you′re free to start another trial now if you wish.

    New Features
    ------------
We have recently put a lot of effort into improving the usefulness of SkyDemon in mountainous territory, particularly the Alps. This includes a massive improvement in terrain detailing, improvement in drawing speed, inclusion of mountain passes, inclusion of GAFOR routes and much more. Our goal as always is for our chart to be more useful than the local paper ICAO charts, and our terrain detail is now much better and usable even at large scales. Cableways and other joined-up obstructions are now better represented, particularly at large scales. Take a look at the two linked screenshots below to compare our old Swiss chart and the new one.

Across all of our products we now include names of landscapes, waterscapes and mountain ranges in the background of our charts. This is done in a subtle way and adds a level of interest without detracting from overall legibility. We also added instrument approach fans in the UK, to depict where an instrument approach exists outside of controlled airspace. This was a common request, as they are depicted on local paper charts.

Some features from our PC software have made it into our iOS and Android products. You can now easily create waypoints relative to other waypoints, and you can specify the wind for a route explicitly if you don’t want to use the forecasts (or you want to produce a nil-wind PLOG). We have also reworked the Aircraft Editor screen to be more friendly and helpful.

Our Android product continues to be improved. It now has access to the Document Browser, which is a handy index onto full national AIPs, non-airfield parts of plate products you may have purchased, and your own custom PDFs. The Scratchpad is now available too, which is a way of quickly taking notes. The whole user interface has been reworked to be more intuitive, making better use of popups in a manner similar to our iOS product.

There are quite a few other new features too, but not enough space to go into them here. They’re all documented in the online manual though, and we talk about them every week on our Facebook page.

    New Airfield Plates Available
    -----------------------------
We’ve been partnered with Pooley’s for over a year now, selling their UK airfield plates with great success. The plates are mostly georeferenced which means they can be embedded into the SkyDemon map; very useful if you are taxiing around an unfamiliar airfield. In January we were pleased to add their Ireland flight guide as well, which has another 50 georeferenced plates in it. We’d recommend these to anybody flying in Ireland as they contain a wealth of local information.

In January we also partnered with Skyguide to include their Swiss VFR Manual in SkyDemon. Again, these plates are fully georeferenced and there are currently 168 documents available. They include highly detailed approach and departure charts for many airfields in Switzerland which can be embedded in the SkyDemon map for enhanced detail in those phases of your flight.

    Coming Soon
    -----------

Our latest software and charts now include upper airways, by popular request by those subscribers who use SkyDemon as an IFR moving map. Related to this, but also for VFR pilots who like to fly higher, is a new Wind Analysis feature we’ve been working on. After you’ve planned your route you can run this tool which will tell you how long your flight will take, and how much fuel you’ll use, at a range of different altitudes. This makes it very easy to determine which level is the most efficient to use. SkyDemon has traditionally only included wind forecasts up to 12,000 feet and this has been raised to 24,000 feet going forward, partly to support this new tool.

We’re also working on making our georeferenced plates more discoverable. In isolated local areas these excellent vector maps provide more detail than the SkyDemon charts so we want to integrate them better, and make them appear seamlessly when you need them. This will be particularly useful when you’re on the ground and you’d like a map of the airfield, and also when you’re on approach and the airfield has a good approach chart available (plenty of these in France, Germany and Switzerland). ..."
  • Hallo Gerd,
